Renewing a Jamaican passport while living in New York

Online renewal for adults, what minors and first-time applicants need, and where the consulate is.

Updated November 4, 2026

Many Jamaicans in New York put off renewing their passport until a funeral, wedding or emergency trip. Here's how to get it done before you need it.

Adults: renew online

Eligible adults can renew online through PICA, Jamaica's Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency, at passport.pica-online.com. Online renewal is generally only for adults, and you'll need your most recent Jamaican passport.

Minors, first-time applicants, and lost or damaged passports

These usually need a paper application through the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York (or by mail as instructed). Expect to need:

  • Your most recent Jamaican passport (if you have one).
  • Two identical passport-size photos that meet PICA's photo rules.
  • Original valid ID, such as a U.S. passport, green card, or a U.S. or Jamaican driver's license.
  • A completed application signed by an approved recommender where required (for example a doctor, minister of religion, or attorney-at-law).
  • For minors: the child's birth certificate and parent IDs, plus custody or guardianship papers if a guardian is applying.
  • For lost or stolen passports: a police report and the lost-passport form.

Where to go

Consulate General of Jamaica, New York 300 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017 Check congenjamaica-ny.org for current hours, appointments and forms before you go.

Fees and timing

Fees and processing times change, and expedited options cost more. Check PICA's website or the consulate for the current fee before you apply. Apply at least 2 to 3 months before you plan to travel.

Tips

  • Photos are the #1 reason for delays. Follow PICA's photo chart exactly.
  • If your birth certificate is an old handwritten version, consider getting a new one from Jamaica's Registrar General's Department first.
  • Green card holders: you still need a valid Jamaican passport to travel internationally. Your green card alone isn't a travel document.
  • If you're a U.S. citizen now, you may be traveling on your U.S. passport, but you can still keep your Jamaican passport.

CaribNY isn't affiliated with the Government of Jamaica. Always confirm requirements with PICA or the consulate.
